Introducing greener healthcare practices
Working in healthcare in a changing climate can feel challenging. The health of our natural environment impacts the health of people and communities. Worsening air quality, for example, can impact heart health and aggravate asthma. Worries about our homes and increasing risks of floods or bush fires can also generate feelings of anxiety. In addition, the act of delivering healthcare – an essential service – contributes to climate change in different ways, from energy consumption, an over- reliance on plastics, and waste generation and disposal.

The good news is that there is a whole network of Health Professionals and organisations in Australia and beyond working together to deliver healthcare in a way that is less impactful on the environment while always prioritising the health and wellbeing of people and communities.
On this page you will find information and links to articles and organisations that support Health Professionals from diverse disciplines to deliver healthcare in a sustainable way, as well as information about policy recommendations and national actions – helping to shift healthcare to a more environmentally sustainable footing.
This page will be continuously updated as more resources and support become available.

W: Why preventative healthcare is critical to sustainable healthcare
Preventative Healthcare – a route to sustainablility
Health Professionals can adopt a preventative approach by helping patients build knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their health, navigate the healthcare system, and access appropriate services and support. It also includes creating opportunities for meaningful social connection and encouraging participation in local community activities that bring them joy, purpose and a sense of belonging.
A preventative health approach supports people’s physical, mental and social health and wellbeing, recognising that health is shaped by more than biology. Our daily environments, relationships and access to resources all play a role.
Because preventative health approaches promote healthier, happier lives, they also help reduce avoidable illness and ease pressure on the health system, benefitting people, communities and our planet.
